SEPTEMBER SPEAKER: JENNIFER HUGHES
For 7 years Jennifer lived in Thailand, where she acquired an extensive collection of textiles. During her talk entitled “culture at their fingertips” she will be displaying her collection of textiles and will explain to us how each of the 6 main South-East Asian ethnic groups have their own customs and costumes, all of which are richly decorated with traditional symbols in a variety of techniques, including embroidery, applique, reverse applique, strip patchwork and weaving. Although Jennifer originally trained as a Geography teacher, she also has a background in needlework design. She is a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild, the Associated Guilds of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, and the Textile Society. She has had articles published in
various magazines on topics such as Angkor Wat, Japanese Shibori, Thai Hilltribe Textiles, Weaving in Thailand, British Collectors, Madeiran Embroidery and Chinese Hats. Some of her textiles were displayed in the ‘Silks of the Ancient Kingdoms’ exhibition at the 2004 Knitting and Stitching Shows.
SEPTEMBER TUTOR-LED WORKSHOP
Jennifer Hughes will be leading this workshop in which participants will be making a small bag using decorative techniques which adorn Thai Hilltribe costumes. These will include reverse applique, embroidery and strip patchwork. Polished hemp and silk Ikat from Thailand will be available to buy at approximately £5 per bag or participants may wish to bring their own fabrics. Beads and seeds and other embellishments will also be available to buy. This has been a popular workshop and only 3 places remain. If you are interested please see Kay or Vernice at the July meeting.

VERNICE CHURCH - TEXTILES, THE TAJ MAHAL AND TUK TUKS
The AGM speaker time is an opportunity to find out more about our own members’ work, travels and experiences, in this way making it a more informal occasion. During this year’s AGM Vernice Church has volunteered to give us a presentation based on her travels to Rajasthan and Gujarat in February 2017. India was a country Vernice had wanted to visit for some time because of its associations with colour and textiles. It turned out to be a particularly exciting trip for her. She would like to share some of her experiences with us through the many photographs taken on tour, which will include textiles, museums, Artisan workshops and life in general in these Regions. This promises to be a very pleasant hiatus within the proceedings of the afternoon. Most of you will know Vernice as the branch programme and workshop organiser. She joined the Guild about 20 years ago at the same time as starting Part 1 C&G course with Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn in Windsor. She continues to be a member in Windsor and Marlborough, stitching, preferably by hand, when she can fit it in! She sees her style and inspiration as being eclectic.
OCTOBER 2 DAY TUTOR-LED WORKSHOP = PICTORIAL MACHINE EMBROIDERY
Linda Miller has been a professional embroiderer since she graduated from Winchester school of art in 1988. For the past 28 years she has been making one-off machine embroideries using an industrial Bernina 950 sewing machine and her work is exhibited throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. Some of her work is held in the Southern Arts collection and the permanent textile and dress collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Her book: ‘Creative Machine Embroidery’ was published in 2010 and a TV appearance on ‘Kirstie’s Handmade Britain’ was aired in 2011. During this 2 day workshop, using our own machines and a sumptuous array of threads in a variety of colours and thickness, Linda will teach us how to translate our own original design into a unique stitched picture. For availability see Vernice or Kay.

November 2018
Lydie Gardner is a member of the South West Textile Group. She started her textile career as an assistant to Wendy Froud, a well-known doll and puppet maker. In this role she “dressed” Princess Anne, Prince Charles and Mark Philips for Spitting Image and helped create some chicken puppets for a Paxo commercial. She also dressed some dolls for Jim Henson, puppeteer and creator of “The Muppets”. These dolls were based on characters in his film ‘The Dark Crystal’. She subsequently went on to teach Embroidery and to run Community textile projects, one of particular note being for the V&A. Although she has experimented with many different types of embroidery, Lydie tends to favour work with a humorous content using the construction techniques that she learnt from Wendy Froud. For a while she concentrated on creating life-size soft sculpture cloth gargoyles making series such as ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ and ‘The Office Party’. She declares that ‘her work seems to have shrunk’ recently as she now finds herself working on small humorous figures. She has just completed ‘The W.I. Outing’ and is currently working on some film stars for an automaton called ‘The Red Carpet’. She has also returned to puppet making, creating some ‘disreputable ladies wearing purple’. Lydie’s talk will comprise a short power-point presentation of dolls and puppets made for films and a show and tell of some of her more recent work, during which she will describe some of the construction techniques used. Questions will be very welcome from our members.
